Position Summary:

The Head Audio position serves as the technical lead of all sound and audio operations at The Thunder Bay Community Auditorium. This leadership role oversees all aspects of audio engineering for live performances, events, and productions, ensuring the highest quality sound experience for artists, audiences, and clients. The Head Audio position supervises and directs audio staff, manages equipment and systems, and collaborates with internal and external production teams and clients to meet technical and artistic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all audio operations for concerts, theatrical productions, corporate events, and community functions.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot professional audio equipment including but not limited to mixing consoles, microphones, monitors, playback systems, and digital audio networks.
  • Supervise and schedule union audio technicians, ensuring compliance with collective agreements and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with touring crews, artists, and internal teams to meet technical riders and sound requirements.
  • Design and implement sound reinforcement systems tailored to event needs and venue acoustics.
  • Maintain inventory of audio equipment and coordinate repairs, upgrades, and replacements.
  • Work along with the Technical Director and Director of Finance and Operations to create and adhere to operational and capital budgeting of audio equipment.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior audio staff and apprentices.
  • Participate in production meetings and contribute to event planning and execution.
  • Provide expertise and suggestions on audio system layout and content design as required
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and venue policies.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in live sound engineering, preferably in a performing arts or concert venue
  • Proven leadership experience in a unionized technical environment
  • Experience with networked digital audio devices, including the ability to program and operate high end audio consoles, automated audio control systems and playback devices
  • Strong knowledge of acoustics, signal flow, and sound system design
  • Ability to mix live audio for live audiences, remote streaming, and broadcast audiences at the highest level of proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to set up, troubleshoot and operate a variety of complex digital audio systems
  • Experience in the direction and supervision of crews
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Completion of recognized audio or recording courses is an asset
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and practices, including working at heights, electrical safety, and hearing protection

  • Exposure to loud sound levels and varying lighting conditions
  • This position requires availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on the event schedule and operational needs

Compensation & Benefits:

  • 40-hour weekly guarantee (starting at $57,428.80 annual salary)
