Extravagantly creative, he defied definition and transcended boundaries. He was an infinitely changeable, fiercely forward-looking songwriter who taught generations of musicians and artists about the power of drama, images and personas. Bowie’s lyrics were above all about being an outsider: an alien, a misfit, a faraway astronaut; and his music was a kaleidoscope of influence – rock, cabaret, jazz and classical — always underpinned with genuine heart.
